Christmas Break

Hello, dear ones! I apologize it’s taken so long for this post to go up. Technological issues and prep for the new semester have pushed blogging to the back burner. I am excited to get back into many of the rhythms of life during the semester, including weekly (or biweekly) blogs. But first, I want to share about the last month I’ve had off. This post is a bunch of photos and a list of five of the many things I’m grateful for from break.

Fruit – What an abundance of garden goodies. This break I’ve enjoyed watching green tomatoes grow, harvesting strawberries from a generous neighbor’s plants, cherries purchased from a local family, farmer’s market berries (kiwis too) from the Marlborough region, and foraged plums from an abandoned lot in town.

Strawberries from our neighbors – Beautiful and delicious!

Kombucha – My passion for kombucha has been reignited. I’ve had so much fun fermenting and flavoring lately. The scoby I’m caring for is lively. They grew so much I decided to share some with any interested locals. What fun to meet new people with similar interests.

One of my favorite summertime kombucha flavors!

Connection with home – I’ve found ways to feel closer to family through learning new recipes (tamales and buñuelos) and old ones (enchiladas and quesadillas). The chance to have extra long phone calls was also nice!

My first time making tamales, what a learning process!

Solo campervan life – I borrowed Courtnay’s campervan to get up to Nelson, NZ. I hit up three farmer’s markets, hiked a little, and enjoyed the new scenery. My favorite place was the Brook Waimārama sanctuary. I totally nerded out over the diversity of native plants and birds!

Dawsonia suberba (NZ’s tallest moss), lancewood juveniles, tree ferns, and more!

Fun times with local friends – These include; dog walks, swims, quiz nights, a painting party, mini golf, garden days, and shared meals.

New Year’s Eve with friends – Lisa, Niza, Candice, and Courtnay
I also spent one weekend helping out in Margaret’s amazing garden!

I feel blessed and refreshed from the break. I hope to carry into the semester the same enthusiasm for the important things, however small they are. And to share those passions with this new group of students!
