The past two weeks I have been the TA for environmental literature. My co-worker/friend Stephen and I try to alternate who is TA for which course, but I almost always end up doing this one! I just love the opportunity to find new authors, expand my perspective, and improve my writing. This time around I also got the chance to teach a couple small portions of class! It’s funny how nervous I was – I was shaking in my slippers. Thankfully, the students and Susan Felch (our wonderful professor) were super supportive.

In other news, I’ve been getting back into a rhythm of taking a daily walk/run before breakfast. It’s a great way for me to connect with the land, appreciate where I am, and who I’m with – hello Piwakaka! Most of the photos I’m sharing here are ones I took on those walks. I’ve been in awe of the spring colors here; yellow kowhai, green moss, and deep brown soil.

Speaking of soil, here’s a garden update! We have “real” leaves on the tomatoes, the lettuce seedlings are ready to transplant, and the “fiesta” radish mix I sowed are beginning to sprout in their containers. I really miss the abundance of veggies in North Carolina, but we’re making a start.

I drove to Christchurch again this weekend to drop Susan off at the airport and spend time with my friend brenda at a conference. I enjoyed it! It was the national gathering for The Navigators. However, I think my favorite part of the weekend was the drive back to Kaikoura. It was a sunny, gorgeous day for a drive. I wish I could have shared it with you, my loved ones back home. At least now you know I was thinking of you.
As I write this, we are halfway through the week. And this weekend is the beginning of midterm break! I can hardly believe we’ve made it to the halfway point of the semester. As most of the students explore the South Island, I will be spending time at a permaculture garden nearby. I’m looking forward to learning more there. I will share about that adventure and the rest of this week soon.
