Arrival

It’s official! I have arrived in Kaikōura, New Zealand. I’ve been here for almost two days now and it still doesn’t feel real. I can’t believe it’s been more than two years since I was last here. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting my journey back to this place!

I went on a long walk this morning, in the cool late winter air. The snowy Seaward Kaikōura Range took my breath away. I sat in South Bay and wrote a letter to my future self to read in a few months (and in the midst of a busy semester). I want it to remind me of the gratitude I feel overwhelmed with right now and my purpose in being here.

As I wrote, I noticed two pohowera (banded dotterels) foraging on the beach. They are so cute! I also saw 3 or more paikia (humpback whales) super close to shore! This place really is amazing. I hope you all don’t get tired of hearing how much I love this spot!

Churchill Park (next to where I live)

I’ll be spending the rest of this week recuperating from my travels and distancing from my co-workers until I get a second negative covid test result on Sunday or Monday. I will be going on lots of walks, weeding in the backyard, and hopefully catching up with some other local friends (creatures included)!
